Tightly Unwound

May 2008
KScope

The 7th TPT album released this year was also the debut release on the brand new Kscope label, a division of Snapper Music.  The 9 tracks catch the band at their undeniable best, stretching from the gentle, emotional melody of ‘My Debt to You’, through to the powerful rock of ‘Shoot First’ and the longer progressive movements of ‘Different World’ and ‘Too Much to Lose’.  If there is one album that defines the band, then this is it.

Collectors note: there are some promo versions of this album out there (with a single, card sleeve) with a slightly different track order to the final release (Tightly Wound and The Sorry State swapped).

Track listing:

  1. My Debt To You 5:16
  2. Shoot First 4:12
  3. Sinners 4:52
  4. Tightly Wound 6:35
  5. The Sorry State 4:11
  6. My Bleeding Hand 4:20
  7. Different World 10:44
  8. And So Say All Of You 4:05
  9. Too Much To Lose 15:13

What We Have Sown

October 2007
Cyclops Records

This was the last release with Cyclops, after nearly 10 years on the label.  The album is a bit of a curiosity as it was written during the ‘Tightly Unwound’ sessions as a ‘thank you’ to Malcolm and everyone at Cyclops before the band moved on.  All in all, the album took 8 weeks to complete from start to finish.  Bruce often describes it as ‘8 Weeks Later’.  Some of the tracks were unfinished works Bruce found hidden in his studio.  ‘All You Need to Know’ was actually the first song written for ’10 Stories Down’ but for some reason got forgotten.  ‘Well I Think That’s What You Said’ and ‘Take Me With You’ were from the Little Man sessions.  The rest were written specially for the release.   Yes, it’s dominated by the 27 minute ‘title’ track but the album stands up surprisingly well and has received glowing praise throughout the world, much to Bruce’s surprise.

What We Have Sown now stands up in the TPT discography as an album in it’s own right.  All fans must own it.

Track listing:

  1. "All You Need to Know" (4:19)
  2. "Well, I Think That's What You Said?" (5:20)
  3. "Take Me With You" (5:07)
  4. "West Winds" (8:52)
  5. "Deep Blue World" (6:08)
  6. "What Have We Sown?" (27.33)

Little Man

November 2006
Cyclops Records

This is the eagerly anticipated 5th album from The Pineapple Thief and the quality of the album more than justifies the wait. This is a stunning set of songs that exemplifies the melodious quality of the band and of the main songwriter Bruce Soord.

Although the album is a little heavier in places than the last album, it is still instantly recognisable for its trademark sonic canvases of guitars, bass, drums, keyboards and vocals, once again supplemented by some great violin. From the guitar intro of “Dead in the water” to the beautiful and melodic “Little man” and “November” through to the epic “We love you” this is at The Pineapple Thief their best.

Track listing:

  1. "Dead in the Water" (5:27)
  2. "God Bless the Child" (4:45)
  3. "Wilting Violet" (4:42)
  4. "Wait" (3:26)
  5. "Run a Mile" (6:43)
  6. "Little Man" (3:44)
  7. "November" (6:51)
  8. "Boxing Day" (3:58)
  9. "God Bless the Children" (2:02)
  10. "Snowdrops" (5:59)
  11. "We Love You" (8:46)

4 Stories Down
March 2005
Cyclops Records

Mini-album consisting of album version of 'Clapham' and 'Wretched Soul' plus a brand new song 'Ground Floor' and a seven minute version of The Pineapple Thief anthem 'Subside'.

1. Clapham
2. Wretched Soul
3. The Ground Floor
4. Subside (13th floor mix)

12 Stories Down
March 2005
Cyclops Records

Another Pineapple collectable - this release came to the fans almost too quickly. It seemed as soon as Bruce had mixed the final track it was being sent off to fans around the world. The result was sonically a little flat, but it still showcases what lied in store when '10 Stories Down' was finally released in 2005. One thing of note - about 100 copies of these were sent out with the wrong master (the album had been incorrectly mastered and was very compressed, resulting in pumping bass (in a bad way) and literally no quiet sections). That makes them ultra rare. This version came with the bonus '8 Days Later' CD and features five songs not available elsewhere - 'Slip Away', 'Catch the Jumping Fool', 'Watch the World Turn Grey' and 'Who Will Be There'.

Variations on a Dream
March 2004
Cyclops Records

Recorded throughout 2003, this is a more sombre work than previous releases and is certainly not '137 Part 2'.  Containing fans favourites  Subside, Vapour Trails and Remember Us.  All Pineapple heads should own this album.

If you were lucky enough to obtain the '8 Days' bonus CD then you have a truly collectable disc (limited to 1000).  People are always asking if we have any plans to re-release the original '8 Days' disc.  At present, there are none...

  1. "We Subside" (4:58)
  2. "This Will Remain Unspoken" (3:28)
  3. "Vapour Trails" (8:32)
  4. "Run Me Through" (4:42)
  5. "The Bitter Pill" (4:36)
  6. "Resident Alien" (4:14)
  7. "Sooner or Later" (4:16)
  8. "Part Zero" (7:27)
  9. "Keep Dreaming" (4:27)
  10. "Remember Us" (16:18)

The second 'must own' Pineapple album and to some fans, still the best.  And yes, there is a mistake with the track order on the jewel case.

  3. "Kid Chameleon" (6.56)

Abducting the Unicorn
March 2001
Cyclops Records

Originally titled 'Abducted at Birth', this was re-titled by Cyclops to emphasize the links with Vulgar Unicorn. Bruce reluctantly agreed to this, however, the title is meaningless.

A minority still view this as the best Pineapple Thief album - it's raw, it's bold and definitely sounds like a debut album...

Collectors note - the original version has a grey 'on-cd' print (1000 pressed).  A mistake with the films meant the re-press have a bland, hard to read white on-cd print.

  1. "Private Paradise" (11:47)
  2. "Drain" (6:35)
  3. "Whatever You Do, Do Nothing" (6:18)
  4. "No One Leaves This Earth" (5:56)
  5. "Punish Yourself" (4:26)
  6. "Everyone Must Perish" (4:36)
  7. "Judge the Girl" (6:12)
  8. "Parted Forever" (18:27)

Limited Edition Live DVD
March 2003
Self release

A real collectors item this - the first three gigs captured on handheld and edited together to created an almost passable live DVD. Put it this way, CGI is not featured heavily in the production and the crew consisted of friends and partners.  Sound was via a single, stereo condenser.  Funnily enough, it struck a chord with many fans as it certainly places you in the middle of the crowd...

Collectors note - The first edition has black 'on-cd' labels.  The re-press is clearly marked on the case and features a different, colour on-cd print.

  1. Part Zero (7:58)
  2. Preserve (5:00)
  3. Keep Dreaming (4:04)
  4. Kid Chameleon (6:20)
  5. MD One (4:23)
  6. Sooner Or Later (4:09)
  7. Vapour Trails (8:56)
  8. Unspoken (3:38)
  9. 137 (5:17)
  10. Subside (6:31)B
    Bonus Studio Tracks
  11. Bliss (3:51)
  12. What A Way To Lose (2:47)
  13. Crash (3:58)
  14. Your World (3:23)

Sherbert Gods 7" Vinyl
2001
Self release

A vain attempt to garner some much needed publicity, this oddity for Pineapple Thief completists is interesting none the less. Two short songs with, I have to say, throw away lyrics and a contrived poppy edge.  It still remains (within The Pineapple Thief circles at least) collectable.
